Coming Home to Serve: A Student’s Journey to Hope

Over Creighton University’s Spring Break in March, Raoul Djidjoho, a Creighton junior, participated in a GPiH-led vision trip. Born in Benin, Raoul’s family received a lottery visa to come to the US when Raoul was 5. This trip was his first time back home in 15 years. Needless to say, this was a powerful home-coming for Raoul.

“Returning to Benin was more than just going back home,” Raoul shared. “It was deeply emotional.

It felt like touching something sacred. This trip reconnected me with the heartbeat of my identity. It reminded me why I care so deeply about justice and equity.”

As Raoul spoke with locals in his native dialect, met the leaders behind the vision, and visited the site of the next health center in Benin, he was struck by what he saw: “These weren’t just spaces for healing,” he said. “They were spaces of hope, joy, and trust. This isn’t just charity—it’s a community.”

Raoul’s understanding of service was deeply transformed by the trip: “I used to think impact only came from big systems and sweeping policies,” he shared. “But in West Africa with GPiH, I witnessed something different—real change happening through small, consistent acts of love, led by the very communities they serve.”

What stayed with Raoul most were not just the places he visited, but the people—their stories, their courage, and their hope. He remembers one mother in particular, whose decision to continue her pregnancy was met with compassion and support from a clinic staff member empowered by GPiH’s mission.

“That’s the kind of impact that never leaves you,” Raoul reflected. “These aren’t just numbers on a report. These are real people. Real lives. Real futures are being transformed.”

Raoul returned from West Africa not only moved, but also mobilized. With a renewed sense of purpose, he shared: “My voice, my background, my education—they’re not just for me. They can serve something greater. Especially if I stay connected to my roots.” Raoul will be coming on as a Project Manager Intern this summer with GPiH. We are very grateful to him!
